Rumor has it that the 2018 Acura ILX is most likely to arrive as a completely redesigned model. According to reliable sources, the next-generation ILX will ride on a modular platform that underpins the new Honda Civic. We could also get to see a turbocharged 2.0-liter “Earth Dreams” four-banger under its hood. As for the current version of this compact luxury sedan, it has been around since 2012. With the launch of the redesigned ILX, Acura will try to move further away from Honda’s mainstream cars. We expect the all-new model to arrive in late 2017 or early 2018.
2018 Acura ILX Design and Specs
Official reports concerning the upcoming redesign are still scarce. We know for certain that the 2018 Acura ILX will share its underpinnings with the latest Civic. Acura’s sedan should benefit from the new modular platform that will make it lighter and stiffer than before. Reduced curb weight should result in improved handling and fuel efficiency. In terms of exterior styling, don’t expect the redesigned ILX to stray too far from the ongoing iteration. Instead, it will adopt mostly evolutionary changes, while retaining its current proportions. Of course, the ILX will boast a touch of sophistication and elegance that sets it apart from Honda’s lineup. Details concerning the interior design are sadly still unavailable. We expect the new model to benefit from much improved insulation of the cabin. Moreover, it will receive a large number of the company’s latest convenience and safety features.
As mentioned, the next-generation Acura ILX is due to offer substantial mechanical upgrades. The most notable innovation will come in the form of Honda’s 2.0-liter turbo VTEC engine. This powerful unit is expected to power the 2018 Acura ILX Type-S, making at least 300 horsepower. Some sources suggest that the engine lineup could also include 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinders. As for the current model, it uses a 2.4-liter four-banger that punches out 201 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque. It comes with a smooth dual-clutch 8-speed automatic transmission and delivers a fuel economy of 25/35 mpg (city/highway).
