Known to be BMW’s electric hatch i3 first appeared in 2017. Although meant to be a smaller version of the legendary i8, the i3 didn’t quite match up against the likes of Tesla’s Model 3 and Chevrolet Volt EV. However, this time around BMW has claimed to come up with an upgraded version of this hatch. This has consecutively sparked rumors of 2018 BMW i3.
An enhanced electric motor
Expect BMW to upgrade its battery pack which will now give out close to 190 HP of power. It will surge this hatchback from 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds and provide and EPA rating of 150/135 mpg in city/highways respectively. Top speed of this hatchback is said to reach 100 mph with new upgrades. Engineers at Germany have promised to extend the battery life of 2018 BMW i3 close to 200 miles.
This along with a gasoline engine will provide a total range of 280 miles. Although power outputs from the gasoline unit are yet to be declared, sources claim it to be around 130 HP. The battery pack is expected to be charged within 3 hours provided it receives a 220 Volt power output.
Exteriors of BMW i3 2018
The Germans will retain their all black and glass dominant design in the 2018 BMW i3. That trademark company grille gets blue linings highlighting its closeness to the i8. A couple of Bi-Xenon LED headlamps to adorn the front fascia of the vehicle which sits on top if the large body colored bumper.
Both front and rear hoods get a glossy black finish that bears the BMW logo at both ends. Windows have gone for their thin bezel look and with match with them are those large wheel arches. Talking of arches, BMW i3 2018 will be gifted with standard 19-inch aluminum wheels which will be mated to all-season tires.
A four seated car by all means, 2018 BMW i3 provides 6 way driver and adjustable passenger seats as standard. Everything from seats to the steering wheel will be leather upholstered and the German automakers have also promised to provide ambient lighting as a new feature.
Infotainment will be taken care of with a couple of LCD monitors in the front. One will act as the instrument cluster proving information about the speedometer, battery level, odometer. While the other will be responsible for entertainment. This will be fitted to a 4 speaker Dolby surround sound system along with FM radio as standard. Along with Bluetooth wireless phone connectivity, Aux Audio input jack, and steering mounted total in house controls will also be provided.
ABS and EBD are the two essential features to start in this segment. Being the country of the Autobahn, no compromise has been made in the safety features of 2018 BMW i8. In addition to this, Electronic Stability Control and Drive Line Traction Control provide better hold on tarmac. To ensure safety on highways side impact beams come coupled with low tire pressure warning and Lane Keep Assist.
Price and Release Date
With a price tag of around $45,000, 2018 BMW i3 will hit world market by Q1 or Q2 of next year. Only time will say how this new vehicle competes against the likes of Chevy Volt EV, Kia Soul EV and Mercedes B class.
