As it has recently been confirmed by a set of spy shots, the most powerful version of the Ford Mustang is currently in the making. A test prototype spotted near Ford’s Dearborn development facility is believed to be the new Shelby GT500 with more than 700 horses at its disposal. The performance-oriented version of the sixth-generation Mustang could make its first public appearance at the 2017 Detroit motor show in January. However, it’s still not clear whether the 2018 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will hit the market under this nameplate or use the old Mach 1 moniker as suggested by some sources.
Needless to say, the 2018 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will be a more aggressive version of the GT350 when it comes to exterior styling. The upcoming GT500 will borrow some of its body parts from the GT350, while introducing a number of unique styling cues. For instance, it will sport a front bumper with a notably larger splitter, while its rear end is expected to receive a more massive fixed wing sitting on top of the trunk lid. Also, the front fascia will feature a restyled grille that lets more air into the engine. A reshaped bumper will have larger air intakes too. Other exterior components unique to the new GT500 include a redesigned hood fitted with a large scoop, new side skirts and a revised diffuser.
Unfortunately, we are still in the dark as far as the 2018 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500’s interior is concerned. It is reasonable to suspect, though, that its cabin design will be based on the GT350. While retaining a similar dashboard and center stack, the GT500 will offer a number of unique features. Expect it to get sports seats, high-quality upholstery with contrast-stitching as well as a fair share of “GT500” badges throughout the cabin.
2018 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Powertrain
Rumor has it that the 2018 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will get its first twin-turbocharged engine instead of the supercharged unit used by its predecessor. It’s not clear what engine will be under its hood. Some reports hint at 2018 Mustang GT500 twin-turbo will be version of the 5.2-liter V8 that propels the current GT350. According to them, the all-new Shelby GT500 could come with stunning 750 horsepower under its hood. Other sources speculate about a twin-turbo EcoBoost variant of the Mustang GT’s 5.0-liter Coyote V8.
2018 Shelby GT500 Price
Although it’s still too early to talk about prices, the 2018 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will definitely be the most expensive version of the current Mustang priced at around $70,000. Its key rivals include the 707-hp Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and 650-hp Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. In our opinion, the upcoming GT500 could easily become the class-leading option once it hits the North American streets.
