Rumor has it that Mazda intends to launch its new range-topping sports car sometime in 2017. Namely, the new rear-drive model could mark 50 years since the Japanese automaker introduced its first rotary-powered vehicle. If that pans out, the upcoming model will likely be sold as the 2018 Mazda RX-7. The successor to the much-revered RX-7 sports car will be greatly influenced by the RX-VISION concept. According to Mazda, this aggressively styled model will get a new-generation rotary engine. Interestingly, a dedicated team of engineers has been developing this powertrain for almost nine years now.
Design and Features
The resurrected RX-7 will certainly borrow heavily from the 2015 RX-VISION concept. However, it remains to be seen to what extent this concept vehicle will influence the production model. In any case, the front-engined RX-7 will feature an aggressive take on the company’s KODO design language. Expect it to come with a slightly higher roofline and a toned down version of the concept’s front fascia. Other alterations will likely include a less raked windshield, production door handles and new multi-spoke wheels. When it comes to proportions, the new RX-7 will not stray too far from the RX-VISION.
Oddly enough, the RX-VISION offered an interior that could easily make it to production without major revisions. So, expect the 2018 Mazda RX-7 to feature a clean and simple cabin design. The production-ready model will likely receive a slightly restyled dashboard as well as a reshaped center console. It will also sport a large touchscreen display and the company’s latest infotainment system. Upscale materials such as aluminum and leather will be available on higher trims. Moreover, the RX-7’s cabin will feature an overall sporty design that comes in two-tone combos.
2018 Mazda RX-7 Engine Department
Mazda has yet to reveal more details concerning the 2018 Mazda RX-7 drivetrain. What we do know is that the production model will use a version of the rotary engine called SkyActiv-R. This advanced powertrain is expected to bring improved fuel efficiency, emissions and reliability. An insider source reveals that it could use a turbocharger that could help it rival the Porsche Cayman. In that case, expect the RX-7 to have around 300 horsepower at its disposal. As for the transmission, we expect a manual or possibly a dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
As we’re still awaiting more substantial reports on the RX-7, it’s still too early to draw a proper conclusion. Of course, the brand new rotary engine under its hood is a hugely important innovation. As for the 2018 Mazda RX-7 price, the entry-level models should start upwards of $35,000.
