Subaru enthusiasts will be glad to hear that the high-performance version of the Impreza is due to arrive for the 2018 MY as a completely redesigned model. Namely, the 2018 Subaru Impreza WRX STI will hit the market a year later than the all-new 2017 Impreza. Of course, the WRX STI will share much of its features with the standard Impreza compact car, including the new Subaru Global Platform. Just like its less powerful sibling, the upcoming WRX STI will be a more upscale and refined model compared to the previous generation. Rumor also has it that Subaru intends to replace the old 2.5-liter four-cylinder boxer with a new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-banger.
The shift to the new Subaru Global Platform will affect both the regular Impreza as well as the WRX STI greatly. First off, the fifth-generation model be slightly longer, wider and lower than its predecessor. To be more precise, expect the 2018 Subaru Impreza WRX STI to be 1.6 inches longer, 1.5 inches wider and 0.4 inches lower. Its wheelbase is extended by an inch compared to the previous generation. Thanks to its lightweight and sturdy modular architecture, the redesigned Impreza will boast improved handling, while offering greatly improved safety.
Design-wise, expect both the hatchback and sedan variants to sport a more exciting sheet metal with a touch of refinement that makes the next-generation model stand out on the street. With the larger dimensions, the Impreza WRX STI will be considerably more spacious and comfortable, especially for rear passengers. The layout will be pretty much the same as in lower-trim Impreza. The performance-oriented version is due to receive a slew of premium materials and features. Expect the 2018 WRX STI to offer such features as leather-wrapped steering-wheel, emergency brake and shift knob, as well as sport pedals fitted with rubber inserts for better grip.
2018 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Twin-turbo
As mentioned, Subaru will get rid of the 300-hp 2.5-liter turbo flat-four that has powered the WRX STI ever since its inception in 2004. Instead, the 2018 Subaru Impreza WRX STI is expected to adopt the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 325 horsepower in the model sold exclusively on the Japanese market. It has been speculated that the upcoming WRX STI could move towards a hybrid drivetrain. Some of the latest reports suggest otherwise. In any case, expect 2018 WRX STI twin-turbo to churn out more horsepower and provide a better driving experience than ever before.
By making the new WRX STI more upscale both inside and outside, Subaru hopes to make it much more competitive in the race with sleek-looking Ford Focus RS and Volkswagen Golf R. With the latest round of upgrades and improvements, the 2018 Subaru WRX hatchback is expected to pose a great threat to its rivals.
