Release date of the next-gen Tesla Roadster has been a much-debated issue over the last few years. According to some sources, the all-new Roadster was supposed to arrive later than previously expected. However, the freshest reports now claim the second-generation Roadster is most likely to go on sale as a 2018 model. According to a company official, the upcoming model will be “a little different, a little bigger and a little faster”. Unlike the ongoing version that rides on a platform borrowed from Lotus, the 2018 Tesla Roadster will use in-house underpinnings. If these rumors turn out to be true, the all-new model could make its debut in late 2017 or early 2018.
2018 Tesla Roadster Design and Features
One of the most notable changes expected from the new Roadster will be its new architecture. Expect it to adopt Tesla’s third-generation platform that underpins the Model 3. As for the car’s exterior styling, details are still scarce. However, we expect the 2018 Tesla Roadster to adopt a front fascia that’s more in line with the flagship Model S. Of course, the Roadster will feature a more athletic and considerably more aerodynamic shape. Expect it to get a more aggressive nose as well as thinner headlights. Moreover, the next generation will be noticeably larger than the original model.
Larger dimensions will allow for a cabin that offers much more passenger space than before. Being a Tesla, the new Roadster will certainly boast impressive luxury and technology. So, expect its cabin to offer brushed aluminum and polished zinc, as well as top-notch Nappa leather upholstery. Optional features will probably include carbon fiber and several additional interior colors. Technology-wise, expect the 2018 Tesla Roadster to feature the company’s recognizable giant touchscreen mounted on the central console. Tesla’s infotainment system will offer such features as smartphone integration, WiFi internet connectivity, Bluetooth, etc.
New Tesla Roadster Drivetrain
Probably the most interesting aspect of this amazing car will be its drivetrain. Similar to the Model S that offers “Ludicrous’ mode, the 2018 Tesla Roadster will get “Maximum Plaid” mode. According to the company, the Roadster’s optional mode will be even faster than ludicrous. That basically means it will be able to hit 60 mph in less than 2.8 seconds scored by the fastest Model S. On top of that, expect the new Roadster to have a huge range. The recently updated Tesla Roadster 3.0 featured a range increased to 400 miles, while the 2018 model should boast even better numbers. Detailed drivetrain specifications are still unavailable. At the moment, Tesla’s top battery option comes in the form of a 90-kWh unit that powers the P90D model.
As far as the pricing figures are concerned, the company has yet to release official statements. We expect the all-new Roadster to surpass the current top-spec Model S that starts at around $125,000. So, expect the 2018 Tesla Roadster to be in the $150,000 range.
