A successor to the Mazda RX-8 has been anticipated by automotive enthusiasts for quite some time. Namely, the model wearing an RX-9 badge has been announced on several occasions over the last few years. Despite numerous conflicting reports, we expect Mazda to unveil a concept model of the upcoming RX-9 sometime in 2017. In that case, the production-ready version is likely to go on sale for the 2019 model year. This basically means the 2019 Mazda RX-9 will be the brand’s first car with a rotary engine since the RX-8. According to some sources, it could hit global markets in late 2018 or early 2019.
Design and Features
Expect the RX-9 to come in the form of a two-door coupe with an eye-catching design. It’s likely to ride on a modified version of the chassis that underpins the MX-5. Although larger than the MX-5, Mazda’s upcoming sports coupe will offer seating for just two. In terms of styling, the Mazda RX-9 will draw inspiration from the RX-Vision concept. So, expect it to sport similar thin headlights, a striking front grille as well as a long hood. Unlike most Mazda models that feature sharp lines, the all-new RX-9 will get a smoother shape and an elegant roofline. Expect also to see LED-infused light clusters as well as a rear spoiler.
The 2019 Mazda RX-9’s cabin will take its cues from the RX-Vision, as is the case with its exterior. Expect its cockpit to benefit from a clean and futuristic design with a clutter-free dashboard as its centerpiece. Moreover, the production version of the RX-9 will get a centrally mounted infotainment touchscreen. Expect it also to offer high-end materials as well as Mazda’s latest safety and convenience features.
2019 Mazda RX-9 Specs
According to reliable sources, the 2019 Mazda RX-9 should use a 1.6-liter, two-rotor Wankel engine with a single turbocharger. This mighty powertrain will churn out around 400 horsepower. Thanks to the car’s low curb weight of just 2,900 pounds, the RX-9 should have an almost “bike-like” acceleration. More details on the performance figures will hopefully surface in the next few months.
Mazda RX-9 Price
As for the 2019 Mazda RX-9 price tag, we’re still pretty much in the dark. We estimate that the entry-level version could start upwards of $50,000.
