The long-anticipated return of the BMW 8 Series seems to be well under way. Recent spy images have revealed works on the new M8 flagship model that is scheduled to arrive by the end of the decade. This high-performance coupe is rumored to benefit from a new twin-turbocharged V8 churning out stunning 600 horsepower or even more. By adding the all-new M8 to the 8 Series lineup, the German automaker intends to take on the likes of the Bentley Continental GT, Aston Martin Rapide and Mercedes-AMG S63. According to some sources, the new BMW M8 could make its global debut in the second half of 2019.
The BMW M8 will be based on the versatile CLAR platform that underpins the current 7 Series. The same Carbon Core architecture is also set to be applied across BMW’s range of redesigned 2,3,4 and 5 Series. Thanks to the use of high-strength steel, aluminum, magnesium, carbon-fiber and titanium, the M8 will be an exceptionally light. It will also be efficient while obtaining the highest level of rigidity. The new underpinnings will enable it to accommodate the massive 2+2 layout.
As for the M8’s dimensions, expect this sleek coupe to stretch over 5,000 mm in length. A long sweeping hood and sloping roofline that ends with a short trunk lid featuring it. Some of the features that give it a distinctive profile include flowing C-pillars, frameless doors as well as huge wheel arches. Design-wise, the upcoming M8 will be greatly influenced by the Gran Lusso concept that was first revealed in 2013.
BMW M8 horsepower
As mentioned, the BMW M8 will boast a mighty V8 engine under its hood. Namely, the twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter is expected to punch out in excess of 600 horsepower. Unfortunately, more details concerning the M8’s transmission have yet to be released. As for the standard 8 Series, expect it to offer a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6. The hybrid-powered model should be using the same gas-electric drivetrain that has recently made its debut in the BMW 740e iPerformance.
It goes without saying that BMW enthusiasts from all around the world have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the revived 8 Series. Now, the amazing BMW M8 is expected to become the class-leading model as soon as it hits the market.
